Google faces £1.2 billion collective lawsuit in UK, accused of excessive Play Store fees
Google has been accused of charging excessive fees to Android app developers over the past decade, resulting in inflated prices for goods and services on the Play Store and potentially affecting about 20 million consumers in the UK. During a class action lawsuit hearing at the London Competition Appeal Tribunal on Tuesday, lawyers representing consumers argued that Google’s practice of charging a 30% commission on digital purchases violated competition law. Consumers impacted since 2015 could ultimately receive compensation totaling approximately 1.6 billion dollars (£1.2 billion). In documents submitted to the court, the lawyers stated: "After escaping competitive constraints, Google used its market power to charge unfair prices, harming user interests and reaping unusually substantial returns for nearly 20 years." Google has consistently denied any anti-competitive behavior.
