Tether restores $1.45 million in USDT to 4 THORChain vaults after brief freeze
Tether has reversed restrictions on four THORChain vaults on TRON, restoring access to approximately $1.45 million in USDT for users after a freeze that lasted around three hours.
Tether reverses USDT freeze on THORChain vaults
The brief restriction took place on October 9 and temporarily blocked access to USDT within affected vaults on the THORChain network, disrupting a cross-chain trading route relied upon by some traders and liquidity providers. The block did not result in any loss of funds, as vault balances remained fully intact after the freeze was lifted.
THORChain, a decentralized protocol enabling cross-chain swaps, had to pause TRON trading, deposit operations, and transaction signing due to the freeze. These activities resumed soon after Tether removed the relevant addresses from its blacklist, while 19 additional addresses targeted by the same restriction remain blocked.
Chad Barraford, technical co-founder of THORChain, explained that the team received no prior communication or explanation for the freeze. Barraford stated that the protocol directly reached out to Tether during the incident, seeking clarification and expressing hope that the situation was a misunderstanding.
Chad Barraford, technical co-founder of THORChain, said the project did not receive advance warning about the USDT freeze and immediately contacted Tether for clarity, describing the resolution as a return to normal operations without broader implications for the protocol’s liquidity.
The restored access applies to only those four THORChain vaults. Other addresses blacklisted in the same operation, which remain constrained, do not benefit from this reversal. Thus, the underlying mechanism enabling centrally issued stablecoins to restrict wallet use persists for the affected wallets.
For users, the primary impact was the short-term suspension of trading and liquidity services on the THORChain protocol. The restored balances once again became accessible, ensuring platform functionality for those utilizing the unfrozen vaults.
Mini dictionary: THORChain is a decentralized liquidity protocol that facilitates cross-chain exchanges of digital assets without intermediaries, allowing users to swap cryptocurrencies directly between different blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and TRON.
Regulatory context and Tether’s wallet controls
Tether, the issuer of the largest US dollar-pegged stablecoin in circulation, maintains control over USDT at the smart contract level. The company can freeze or unfreeze specific wallet addresses, typically in response to law enforcement requests or security incidents. In December 2023, Tether announced expanded freezing policies targeting wallets linked to sanctioned individuals or suspicious activity.
The operational pause on THORChain highlighted the dependency that even decentralized projects have on actions by entities controlling major stablecoin infrastructure. Decentralized exchanges or protocols must still account for the centralized authority embedded in these tokens, which can impact continuous access to liquidity or transactional capability if an address is blacklisted.
TRON’s rising USDT supply and market impact
The interruption and restoration of $1.45 million in USDT needs to be viewed within the broader context of the expanding USDT supply on the TRON network. According to data from research firm Lookonchain, the annual increase for USDT supply on TRON amounts to $18.67 billion, bringing the total to $94.25 billion—a growth rate of roughly 24.7%.
| USDT released (THORChain vaults) | $1.45 million |
| Total USDT on TRON | $94.25 billion |
| Annual USDT supply growth on TRON | $18.67 billion (24.7%) |
| Proportion of release vs. network supply | 0.0015% |
While the vault unfreeze helped restore protocol-specific activity, the sum involved represents only a fraction—around 0.0015%—of the overall USDT liquidity on TRON. Existing tokens held in the vaults did not constitute new issuance or net inflow to the stablecoin’s total supply. The event’s significance was largely operational for platform users.
The reopening of THORChain vaults did not indicate fresh capital entering the crypto market, but simply allowed already-issued USDT to become accessible for routine trading and liquidity provision.
The dominance of USDT compared to the broader cryptocurrency market temporarily retreated from a resistance zone noted in September. Still, market observers cautioned that this metric does not reliably predict flows into other cryptocurrencies, as total supply changes can result from a variety of user behaviors including transfers, collateralization, or platform migration.
At the time of the update, the remaining 19 addresses subject to the original restriction remained frozen, and neither Tether nor THORChain publicly disclosed further details regarding the criteria or communication behind the freeze.
