The Governor of the Bank of England, Bailey, issued a warning that the longer the energy shock persists, the harder it will be to resist inflationary pressures. Bailey pointed out that although the current impact of higher energy costs, triggered by the US-Iran conflict, on overall UK inflation remains relatively limited, it is becoming increasingly difficult to prevent the scope of inflation from widening as time goes on. “We need to pay close attention to the indirect and second-round effects of this inflation shock,” Bailey said in an interview. “So far, these transmissions have been relatively mild in the UK, which is certainly reassuring. But the longer this situation continues, the harder it will be to deal with in the future.” When asked whether UK interest rates would be raised soon, Bailey did not give a direct response. He stated: “The analytical framework we have always relied upon has not changed.” Last month, Bailey warned that the longer oil and natural gas costs remain high, the more difficult it will be to withstand the associated pressure for rate hikes.Additional background: Current volatility in the global energy market has had a knock-on effect on inflation trends in multiple countries. For the UK, as an economy highly dependent on energy imports, energy price movements have a particularly significant impact on its monetary policy decisions. Markets will continue to pay close attention to the Bank of England’s interest rate decisions as well as the subsequent impact of energy price fluctuations on UK consumer spending and business operating costs.
