Wells Fargo has confirmed it will collaborate with 20 major financial institutions to launch stablecoins in the first half of 2027. Despite uncertainty about the practical uses of stablecoins in the United States, the bank said it is advancing preparations for digital payment services.

Consortium of Major Global Banks
During the recent quarterly earnings call, Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf commented on the initiative, stating that the financial institution is actively developing solutions involving digital assets while evaluating how stablecoins could benefit U.S. consumers. Scharf acknowledged that mainstream adoption and specific applications for stablecoins within the country are not yet fully defined, but emphasized the importance of being ready for future opportunities.
“Use cases in the US for stablecoins remain unclear, but we’re building solutions to be prepared as opportunities potentially unfold,” Scharf shared during the call.
The consortium, comprising institutions such as Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Capital One, Fidelity Investments, and WisdomTree, is expected to set up the new company in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory clearance and other closing conditions.
European partners in the group include Deutsche Bank, Santander, BBVA, Lloyds Banking Group, and UBS. Additional members from other regions are MUFG, Standard Bank, and Sirius International Holding. The eventual company name will be revealed after formation is finalized.

The group intends to initially issue a U.S. dollar-backed digital token, with the euro and other Group of Seven currencies considered for future inclusion. The service will target wholesale, institutional, and retail customers, particularly focusing on facilitating cross-border payments and digital asset settlements.

Expansion of Tokenized Deposit Services
Wells Fargo recently introduced tokenized deposit services for its corporate and commercial clients. The bank launched this offering in September, enabling certain clients to facilitate real-time transfers between accounts and across countries.
Initially, the rollout allowed select users to exchange U.S. dollars for British pounds. The institution plans to expand these services to include additional currencies, clients, and countries into 2027.
The tokenized deposit platform uses programmable payment instructions, meaning funds are automatically transferred when specific prerequisites are satisfied. According to a Cosmos executive, Wells Fargo leverages Cosmos ledger technology for this project.

Tokenized deposits represent digital claims on funds held at commercial banks, offering clients the benefits of blockchain-enabled payments while keeping their assets within the regulated banking system.
Collaboration with Industry Networks and Financial Results
In addition to its stablecoin initiative, Wells Fargo participates in a broader network for shared deposit tokens with JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citigroup. This partnership, managed by The Clearing House, also aims to launch services in the first half of 2027.
On the financial front, Wells Fargo reported third-quarter net income of $5.95 billion, surpassing the previous year’s $5.59 billion for the same period. Diluted earnings per share reached $1.87, compared to $1.66 a year earlier. Quarterly revenue climbed to $21.87 billion, a 2% increase year-over-year.
Wells Fargo saw substantial growth in quarterly net income and advances in digital payment offerings as it positions itself with other leading financial institutions to prepare for the evolving stablecoin landscape.
