Huixun News, October 17—— The CFTC position data for the week ending October 13 has been released. The overall picture is clear: capital is withdrawing. Agricultural product longs sharply contracted, with corn positions reduced by more than 70,000 lots in a single week; U.S. Treasuries saw a broad increase in net shorts, especially on the long end; long positions in gold, silver, and crude oil retreated in tandem. The following breaks down by category: who is reducing, who is holding on, and who is increasing against the trend, one by one.

On Saturday (October 17), the CFTC position data for the week ending October 13 was released. The picture is clear: capital is withdrawing. Agricultural products saw large-scale long position reductions, with corn reducing by more than 70,000 lots in a single week; U.S. Treasuries saw net short increases across all durations, with the long end especially affected; long positions in gold, silver, and crude oil retreated simultaneously. The only exception was U.S. equities, where S&P 500 fund long positions increased rather than fell. The money hasn't left the market—it’s just switching places. Data shows both risk-off and risk-on flows tightened this week. The following breaks down by category: who is reducing, who is holding, and who is adding positions against the trend.

Precious Metals

Gold longs were cut by 3,741 contracts, with net longs dropping to 111,079 lots. Silver was even more notable, with net longs dropping to only 5,735 lots, close to zero. COMEX copper longs were slightly reduced by 295 contracts to 61,170 lots. Interpretation: Precious metals have always been a barometer of risk sentiment. The silver position level indicates that funds have mostly abandoned this round of bets; the moderate reduction in gold positions reflects profit-taking, rather than panic selling. The logic shows this is more like a cooling off at high levels, not a reversal.

Energy

WTI crude oil net longs decreased by 1,017 contracts to 110,619 lots, a small change. Natural gas, however, saw a shift: net shorts across the four major markets narrowed by 11,698 contracts to 100,137 lots. Interpretation: The reduction in crude oil positions was restrained, and with non-reportable positions up by over 10,000 lots, capital is waiting rather than retreating. The short covering in natural gas is noteworthy—when net shorts above 100,000 start to ease, it usually means shorts are taking profits. There is divergence within the energy sector.

Forex

Euro net shorts at 137,573 contracts, pound net shorts at 106,964 contracts, Swiss franc made a rare switch to net short with 22,078 lots. Yen stands alone, with net longs at 50,207 lots. Interpretation: All three major European currencies are being shorted, with safe-haven demand heavily concentrated in the yen. Data suggests the market lacks overall confidence in non-dollar currencies, and if this one-sided betting reverses, volatility will be significant.

US Treasuries

Overall: Except for the 5-year, net shorts in U.S. Treasury futures increased across all durations. 2-year: net shorts up 58,675 to 911,579 lots; 10-year: up 91,621 to 988,102 lots; ultra-long: up 45,258 to 321,597 lots; long-term: up 6,626 to 126,438 lots. The 5-year was the exception, net shorts sharply reduced by 83,327 to 1,080,204 lots. Interpretation: Both the short and long ends were shorted simultaneously, with only the 5-year catching a breather. The 10-year saw the largest increase in net shorts, indicating capital is betting on continued upward pressure in mid-term rates. With total net shorts approaching the one-million contract level, such consensus bearishness is often a prelude to major market moves.

Agricultural Products

This week’s headline is corn. Net longs plunged by 71,762 contracts to 114,542 lots, nearly halved. Soybeans net longs dropped by 15,362 to 178,635 lots, with soybean oil longs shrinking in tandem. Wheat net shorts increased by 3,507 to 64,692 lots; coffee shorts increased by 2,536, while cotton longs were cut back by 2,481 contracts. Sugar was the only outlier, with net longs surging by 16,078 to 167,821 lots. Interpretation: The grain sector saw concentrated unwinding, with corn’s reduction being the most dramatic move in this period’s futures report—watch for follow-through after momentum fades. Sugar was the only bright spot, reflecting an extreme internal rebalancing within the ag complex.

US Equities

S&P 500 futures fund net longs rose by 8,186 to 912,542 lots, with speculative net shorts narrowing by 5,804 contracts. Interpretation: While other markets reduced positions, equity funds were increasing exposure. This divergence indicates risk appetite hasn’t collapsed—capital has simply left commodities and bonds in favor of equities. Risk hasn’t disappeared, it’s just moved to a new vessel.

The key word this week is rebalancing. Agricultural products saw massive unwinding, led by corn; U.S. Treasury shorts ramped up across the board, with only the 5-year getting some covering; precious metals cooled moderately; yen was the standout in forex; capital ultimately flowed into the S&P 500. Data shows overall sentiment contracting, yet the contraction is almost universally directed toward equities. The polarization of position structure itself sets the stage for the next market move.

FAQ

1. What does it mean that corn positions were reduced by 70,000 lots?

Net longs were slashed from 186,000 to 114,000, a typical combination of profit taking and stop loss. Position data is a lagging indicator—it confirms what has already happened; going forward, watch if spot and export data can provide support.

2. Is it normal for U.S. Treasuries to carry such large net shorts?

Both the 2-year and 10-year net shorts are above 900,000 contracts, within historically elevated ranges. Large net short positions carry squeeze risk—if a catalyst forces covering, price swings will be amplified.

3. Why is only sugar being bought?

Net longs increased by 16,000 contracts in a single week, the largest addition among all. This typically corresponds to a clear supply-side driver; compared to other ag products, funds are seeking relatively scarce long opportunities.

4. What does the yen’s 50,207 net longs suggest?

With euro, pound, and Swiss franc all being shorted, the yen is the only major currency with net long positions. The market is using yen to hedge uncertainty—if this consensus softens, the forex market will undergo repricing.

5. Is it contradictory for equities to increase positions while commodities are being reduced?

No contradiction. Data shows it’s the same capital shifting between assets, not a reduction in risk budget. Profits are realized on commodities while positions are added in equities. This divergence is the key signal to watch in this cycle.

Barclays: Dual restrictions of physical and capital, data center growth will slow significantly in 2027!

Barclays' latest report reveals that the global data center construction boom is approaching a turning point—the year-on-year growth rate of new capacity will plummet from over 100% in 2026 to about 35% in 2027, and stabilize by 2028. Facing both physical constraints and tightened financing, hyperscale cloud providers will absorb more than 60% of new capacity, while the risk of project suspension for small and medium developers will sharply increase.
