The Capital Link Maritime Index fell by 6.8% last week, significantly underperforming the S&P 500. Despite the industry's total market capitalization shrinking by $6.5 billion, the tanker sector led the way with a 115% increase year-to-date, and trading activity surged sharply.

According to Woofun AI, the shipping sector underperformed the broader market significantly last week, establishing a weak trend. The Capital Link Maritime Index recorded a 6.80% decline, while over the same period, the S&P 500 fell by 1.95%, the Nasdaq dropped 4.48%, and the Dow Jones Index rose against the trend by 0.67%. Shipping stocks lagged the S&P 500 by 4.86 percentage points. Although the index is still up 73.80% year-to-date—far surpassing the S&P 500's 11.68%—the industry’s total market value has shrunk by $6.5 billion to $89.5 billion.

There was marked divergence among sub-sectors, with mixed vessel types leading the decline while the tanker segment continued to outperform. The Mixed Vessel Type Index tumbled 12.01% in a single week, yet still maintains a 68.28% year-to-date increase. In contrast, although the Tanker Index dropped 5.97%, its year-to-date gain reached 115.06%, securing its position as the best-performing sector. On the freight side, the Clean Tanker Index (BITY) rose 5.62%, while the Dirty Tanker Index (BIDY) fell 5.12%. On the individual stock level, apart from Icon Energy (ICON.US) which surged 18.39%, all other 52 stocks posted losses. Among them, Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN.US) (-0.43%), United Maritime (USEA.US) (-0.79%), Capital Clean Energy Carriers (CCEC.US) (-1.07%), and Ardmore Shipping (ASC.US) (-1.82%) saw relatively smaller decreases.

There was a clear divergence between dry bulk, container, and energy freight indices and stock price trends. Dry bulk stocks fell 7.79%, and the Baltic Dry Index dropped 13.92%, with the Capesize Index plunging 25.14%. The Panamax Index declined 4.54%, while the Handymax Index rose 2.81%, and the Supramax Index increased 1.51%. In the container sector, even though the FBX Global Container Index climbed 6.46%, related stocks still fell 5.50%. LNG/LPG stocks dropped 6.09%, with the BLNG Index down 9.37% and the BLPG Index down 2.88%. On the energy side, Brent crude settled at $109.86, up 4.9% for the week and 82.1% year-to-date; diesel fell to $1,413 per metric ton, down 4.7% for the week, but up 131.2% year-to-date.

Data compiled by Woofun AI indicates that this divergence between freight rates and stock prices reflects the market’s overreaction to short-term supply and demand fluctuations.

Market trading activity increased significantly, with total weekly trading volume reaching $7.2 billion—a 10.2% rise from $6.6 billion last week. The tanker segment contributed 71.43% of the total volume, amounting to $5.2 billion, up 11.6% week-on-week. Frontline (FRO.US) ranked first in trading volume with $1.5 billion, followed by DHT (DHT.US) ($894 million) and Okeanis Eco Tankers (ECO.US) ($554.9 million). In terms of declines, Robin Energy (RBNE.US) plummeted 65.02%, C3is (CISS.US) fell 31.94%, and EuroDry (EDRY.US) dropped 22.17%.

Amid a sharp drop in Korean stocks, Korean retail investors turned contrarian, making a net purchase of over 315.4 billion KRW in leveraged products of Samsung and SK Hynix in October alone. They simultaneously spent 4.7 trillion KRW acquiring US-listed triple-leveraged semiconductor ETF (SOXL), accounting for nearly 74% of total purchases of US stocks during the same period. This marks the first rebound since tightening regulations in July and two consecutive months of net selling.
