Revenue Hits Record High of $1.4 Billion, Why Did Robinhood (HOOD.US) Profits Fall by 14%?

Robinhood's Q3 total revenue reached a record $1.424 billion, but net profit fell 14% year-over-year. Crypto income was halved, while event contracts surged more than sixfold, surpassing crypto, and options became the main pillar. Profits were dragged down by credit losses, valuation losses, and increased taxes.

According to Woofun AI, on October 27, Robinhood (HOOD.US) released its Q3 financial report, showing a significant divergence between revenue and profit: Although the company's total net revenue reached a record high, net profit dropped to $476 million, down 14% year-on-year, while adjusted net profit was $550 million, down 3% year-on-year.

The core driver behind this financial performance is not the linear growth of a single business, but rather a dramatic restructuring of the trading business—in which traditional cryptocurrency trading revenue shrank substantially, while the emerging Event Contracts business saw explosive growth, completely changing the platform's revenue logic.

A detailed breakdown of revenue reveals that total net revenue reached $1.424 billion, up 12% year-on-year, but the various segments showed mixed results. Woofun AI summary data shows that cryptocurrency trading revenue dropped 55% year-on-year to $120 million (a decrease of about $147 million), with notional trading volume declining 38% year-on-year, reflecting a significant cooling in the crypto market’s enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, for two consecutive quarters, Event Contracts have surpassed cryptocurrency trading to become the main growth engine. In Q3, Event Contracts trading reached 16.4 billion contracts, compared to 2.3 billion in the same period last year, with revenue increasing more than sixfold year-on-year. Notably, each Event Contract settles at a final value of $1, with the number of contracts indicating activity and not directly reflecting the dollar amount wagered by users. Event Contracts revenue increased from about $24 million a year ago to $173 million, and this approximately $149 million increase nearly offset the $147 million shortfall from the decline in crypto revenue. As for "other revenue," at $142 million—a 61% year-on-year increase—this mainly came from Trump Account service fees and Gold subscriptions, which are non-trading revenues and not related to the trading business shortfall.

Additionally, options served as another pillar, generating $399 million in revenue, a 31% year-on-year increase, ranking first among the listed trading businesses (with options contracts at 905 million, up 48%, and equity notional trading volume at $992 billion, up 53%, both marking record highs), solidifying Robinhood’s trading revenue base. This model of multiple business relay shows that when the crypto market is quiet, options and Event Contracts can still maintain platform activity. However, the growth of Event Contracts does not exist in isolation; it works together with options, stocks, and other businesses to support overall trading revenue growth.

However, this high growth in revenue did not translate into proportional profit, as net profit shrank to $476 million, a year-on-year drop of 14%. This discrepancy was mainly due to declining net interest income, increased operating expenses, investment valuation losses, and rising taxes. Net interest income fell 9% year-on-year to $415 million, making up nearly a third of current revenue, and was the only major revenue item to drop significantly—primarily due to reduced securities lending activities and lower short-term interest rates. First, operating expenses rose 16% year-on-year to $739 million, mainly driven by an increase in credit loss provisions due to the expansion of the credit card loan business (rising from about $24 million last year to $71 million), as well as increased expenses and investment related to the Trump Account and Rothera; Rothera is Robinhood’s joint venture with Susquehanna, a CFTC-licensed Event Contracts exchange launching in June 2026. These projects are of different natures, so their costs cannot simply be seen as single-product costs, but together they eroded operating profit. Second, outside operating expenses, Robinhood recorded $67 million in unrealized losses in Q3, mainly related to the mark-to-market valuation of Robinhood Ventures Fund I. Although these losses impacted quarterly profits, they do not equate to cash outflows and have been excluded from adjusted figures. In terms of magnitude, net profit decreased by only about $80 million compared to last year, while the $67 million valuation loss and $71 million higher taxes total $138 million, indicating that operating profit itself remained a positive contributor to net profit.

More critically, income tax expenses rose sharply from $78 million last year to $149 million, and despite a slight decline in pre-tax profit, the increased tax burden further squeezed net profit. To present the quality of earnings more clearly, Robinhood began disclosing adjusted net profit this quarter. This metric fell 3% year-on-year to $550 million, a smaller decrease than net profit calculated under US GAAP; adjusted EPS was $0.60, down 3% year-on-year, while US GAAP EPS was $0.51, down 16% year-on-year.

This difference highlights the impact of non-recurring items and accounting treatments on official profit statements; the adjusted figures can partly remove the noise, but cannot replace the comprehensive picture given by the formal profit statement.

Looking forward, Robinhood’s profit logic is shifting from dependence on single crypto trading towards balancing multiple business cycles. Stocks, options, cryptocurrencies, and Event Contracts each have their own trading cycles; this diversified structure strengthens the platform’s risk resilience, but also brings new uncertainties. Related lawsuits and regulatory actions could affect the availability of Event Contracts—a potential risk that the financial report explicitly points out. Beyond the revenue ledger, investment valuations, expenses, and tax expenses collectively determine the amount of profit left in the end. As Event Contracts continue to expand, the evolution of the regulatory environment will be a key variable. If regulations tighten, the growth momentum of Event Contracts may be hindered, thereby impacting the overall revenue structure. Therefore, Robinhood needs to manage compliance risks well while enjoying the dividends of new business in order to secure the robustness of the profit statement.

This quarter’s financial report not only demonstrates the effect of business transformation but also highlights the complex cost structure behind diversification and expansion.

SK Hynix (SKHY.US) Q3 revenue surpasses 100 trillion KRW for the first time, why did net profit drop by half quarter-on-quarter?

SK Hynix's Q3 revenue surpassed 100 trillion KRW for the first time, and operating profit reached a record high, but net profit fell 58% quarter-on-quarter. The main reason is that the base for Kioxia investment income was high in Q2, and there was no such one-off income this quarter. The actual business operations remain strong.
