General Motors to Pay $220 Million in Drivers' Data Privacy Settlement

01:39 PM EDT, 10/29/2026 (MT Newswires) -- General Motors (GM) agreed to pay $220 million to settle allegations that it illegally sold consumers' driving behavior and location data to third parties, including data brokers that resold the information to insurance companies, attorneys general in Washington and Oregon said Thursday. The two states led a coalition of 36 attorneys general in the case against the company. Washington will receive $12.3 million and Oregon more than $10.4 million from the settlement, while Ohio said it will receive about $8.08 million. According to the states, the company enrolled millions of drivers in its Smart Driver program, which tracked their driving habits. As part of the settlement, GM must limit the driving data it collects from consumers and obtain affirmative express consent from consumers before collecting or disclosing driving and location data, the statements said. A GM spokesperson said in an emailed statement to MT Newswires that the Smart Driver program was discontinued in 2024 and the settlement reinforces the steps it has taken to strengthen privacy practices. "GM is committed to being clear about what information is used, how it's protected, and the choices customers have about what they share," the statement said.
