PLTR Revenue Surges 96%, Yet Shares Decline: Can AI Growth Sustain Its Premium Valuation?
2026/11/03 07:49Strong Earnings Beat, but Why Did PLTR Sell Off?
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) delivered an exceptionally strong third-quarter earnings report after the market closed on November 2. Revenue reached $2.313 billion, up 96% year over year and ahead of consensus estimates of $2.18 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.44, also exceeding expectations. The company raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $8.530–8.534 billion and projected fourth-quarter revenue of $2.649–2.653 billion, indicating continued acceleration in enterprise AI demand.
Despite these impressive results, shares remained under pressure. PLTR fell 3.13% during regular trading to close at $178.34, followed by a further decline of approximately 3% in after-hours trading. Overnight prices subsequently approached $170. Investors are increasingly concerned about elevated valuations and slowing contract momentum. U.S. commercial total contract value (TCV) grew just 11% year over year in Q3, sharply below the 153% growth recorded in Q2. For a company carrying exceptionally high expectations, the sustainability of future growth has become a central concern.
AI Commercialization Accelerates, but How Much Growth Remains?
PLTR's underlying business continues to demonstrate remarkable strength. U.S. commercial revenue reached $984 million in Q3, surging 148% year over year and surpassing U.S. government revenue of $953 million for the first time. This milestone highlights the company's expanding enterprise AI adoption and its growing diversification beyond traditional government contracts. Meanwhile, net dollar retention climbed to 165%, adjusted operating margin reached 62%, and adjusted free cash flow margin stood at 53%, underscoring the scalability and profitability of its AI software platform.
However, contract trends warrant closer attention. U.S. commercial TCV declined from $2.132 billion in Q2 to $1.463 billion in Q3. Management noted that certain sovereign AI contracts have shorter durations, which can affect reported contract values, but slower new contract growth could still weigh on future revenue expectations. At an estimated market capitalization of approximately $428.6 billion, PLTR trades at roughly 50 times projected 2026 revenue. Such a demanding valuation leaves limited room for disappointing growth or weaker execution.
Technical Structure Weakens as Shares Break Below Key Moving Averages
From a technical perspective, PLTR has been correcting since reaching a recent high of $212.94 on October 12, falling approximately 16% through November 2. The stock has broken below its 20-day moving average near $196.69 and its 50-day moving average around $186.87, although it remains above the 200-day moving average near $153.57. This suggests that short-term momentum has deteriorated significantly, while the longer-term uptrend has yet to break down completely.
Momentum indicators also point to increasing selling pressure. The 14-day RSI has declined toward 37.7, while the MACD remains bearish and recent trading volumes have increased. Following the post-earnings decline, the $170–172 area represents an important near-term support zone. A sustained breakdown could expose $160 and eventually the 200-day moving average. On the upside, initial resistance stands at $184–187, followed by a more substantial resistance zone around $196–200.
Trading Strategy: Watch $170 Support and Wait for Reversal Confirmation
In the near term, PLTR's strong fundamentals may struggle to offset concerns about valuation and slowing contract growth. Traders should closely monitor whether buyers can defend the $170–172 support zone. If shares stabilize and reclaim $184–187 with improving volume, a technical rebound toward $196–200 could develop. Conversely, a decisive break below $170 would increase the risk of further downside toward $160.
For longer-term investors, PLTR remains a significant beneficiary of enterprise AI commercialization, but its premium valuation requires sustained earnings and revenue growth. Key indicators to monitor include a potential recovery in U.S. commercial TCV growth, delivery against fourth-quarter revenue guidance, and the sustainability of elevated profit margins. Until the technical picture improves, a measured approach centered on gradual positioning and confirmation signals remains appropriate.
