Avoiding Intel’s Fate: AMD Q3 Revenue Beats Expectations, Up 45%; Data Center Nearly Doubles; Q4 Guidance Accelerates to $17 Billion

After Intel was punished by the market for weak guidance, AMD delivered a report that helped lift chip stocks again.

On November 3, 2026, after the close, AMD reported third-quarter results: revenue of $13.377 billion, up 45% year-over-year. It not only set a new all-time quarterly record but also exceeded both the high end of the company’s own guidance and analyst expectations. More importantly, the company guided for approximately $17 billion in fourth-quarter revenue (±3%), implying roughly 66% year-over-year growth and about 27% sequential growth—well above market expectations. The stock rose more than 9% in after-hours trading at one point.

In short: AI demand is now translating into real revenue and profit, and the data center has become AMD’s clear growth engine.

Core Views

  • Revenue reached $13.377 billion, up 45% year-over-year, beating expectations by about 2.3% and exceeding the high end of company guidance.
  • Non-GAAP EPS came in at $2.09, up 74% year-over-year, beating expectations by more than 6%.
  • Data center revenue hit $8.546 billion, nearly doubling year-over-year (+97%), and accounted for roughly 64% of total company revenue.
  • Q4 revenue guidance midpoint of approximately $17 billion implies about 66% year-over-year and 27% sequential growth, significantly above consensus.
  • Free cash flow fell 64% year-over-year to $554 million, mainly due to a large inventory build, but the market largely looked past it for now.
  • The stock rose more than 9% after hours and helped lift other chip names including Nvidia and Intel.

1. Overall Revenue and Profit Performance: Broad Beat, Operating Leverage Emerging

Third-quarter revenue was $13.377 billion, up 45% year-over-year and 16% sequentially, setting a new quarterly record and coming in 15.5% higher than the previous record set in Q2. The company’s prior guidance midpoint was roughly $13 billion (±$300 million). Actual results not only beat the midpoint but also cleared the high end of the range.

Profitability improved more clearly on a non-GAAP basis:

  • Non-GAAP EPS of $2.09, up 74% year-over-year
  • Non-GAAP operating income of $3.923 billion, up 75% year-over-year
  • Non-GAAP operating margin rose to 29%, up 5 percentage points year-over-year and 2 percentage points sequentially
  • Non-GAAP gross margin of 56%, up 2 percentage points year-over-year and in line with guidance

GAAP results were also strong: operating income of $2.832 billion (+123% year-over-year), net income of $2.428 billion (+95%), and diluted EPS of $1.46.

Operating leverage was visible on the expense side. Although GAAP R&D expenses rose about 31% year-over-year to $2.803 billion, revenue grew faster, so non-GAAP operating expenses as a percentage of revenue declined to 27% (from 30% a year earlier and 29% in the prior quarter).

The clear weak spot was free cash flow, which came in at only $554 million, down 64% year-over-year and well below expectations. The main reason was a roughly $3 billion sequential increase in inventory to support data center orders. In the current AI capacity ramp-up phase, this “spend first, deliver later” approach is being viewed by the market as a constructive signal.

Metric Q3 2026 YoY QoQ vs. Expectations / Guidance
Revenue $13.377B +45% +16% Beat by ~2.3%, above guidance high end
Non-GAAP EPS $2.09 +74% — Beat by >6%
Non-GAAP Operating Margin 29% +5 ppts +2 ppts Stronger than expected 28%
Free Cash Flow $554M -64% — Well below expectations

2. Data Center Business: Nearly Doubling — the Real Growth Engine

Data center revenue reached a record $8.546 billion, up 97% year-over-year and 27% sequentially, accounting for roughly 64% of total company revenue (versus about 47% a year earlier). It beat market expectations by about 3.3%.

Segment operating income was $2.882 billion, roughly 2.7 times the year-ago level, with an operating margin of about 33.7%.

Growth came from two main drivers:

  • EPYC server CPUs: Cloud and enterprise customers expanding AI infrastructure are once again increasing demand for CPUs, particularly for inference, AI agent orchestration, and related workloads.
  • Instinct GPUs: The MI450 series began contributing meaningfully, delivering record sales. More importantly, Helios rack-scale systems (MI450 GPUs paired with sixth-generation EPYC Venice CPUs) are already running real workloads at Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Oracle Cloud.

This signals that AMD is moving from simply selling GPUs toward offering more complete AI infrastructure — a critical step if it wants to take meaningful share in a market still dominated by Nvidia.

3. Other Businesses: Client and Gaming Remain Soft, but No Longer Define the Story

Combined Client and Gaming revenue was $3.722 billion, down 8% year-over-year and 3% sequentially.

  • Client: $2.949 billion, up 7% year-over-year but below market expectations. PC demand remains soft.
  • Gaming: $773 million, down 40% year-over-year, though better than expected, mainly due to lower semi-custom revenue.
  • Embedded: $1.109 billion, up 29% year-over-year and above expectations, driven by aerospace & defense, automotive, communications, and industrial markets. Operating margin was roughly 41%.

While Client and Gaming continue to lag, they no longer dominate the AMD narrative in the face of rapid data center growth.

4. Capital Spending and Capacity Investment: Building for Acceleration

Third-quarter capital expenditures were $648 million, up significantly year-over-year. Inventory rose by about $3 billion to $11.463 billion, primarily to support upcoming data center deliveries.

At quarter-end, cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments totaled $15.776 billion, with total debt of $7.079 billion. In the AI capacity ramp phase, this “invest first, convert later” model is currently being accepted by investors — as long as revenue guidance remains strong.

A useful comparison: AMD’s single-quarter guidance midpoint has already reached $17 billion, while Intel’s prior full-company quarterly guidance range was roughly $15–16 billion. A company once viewed as a challenger is now, driven by AI data center demand, approaching or potentially surpassing Intel’s overall quarterly scale.

5. Fourth-Quarter Guidance: The Biggest Positive Surprise

AMD expects fourth-quarter revenue of approximately $17 billion, plus or minus 3%. At the midpoint, this implies:

  • Roughly 66% year-over-year growth
  • About 27% sequential growth

This is meaningfully above the market’s prior expectation of around $16.23 billion.

Non-GAAP gross margin is guided to approximately 55%, a modest decline from Q3’s 56%, likely reflecting new product ramps and mix shifts. At a $17 billion revenue run-rate, however, investors are focused more on the acceleration in growth than on the small margin dip.

Segment outlook:

  • Data center expected to grow about 50% sequentially, with AI-related revenue likely to surpass server CPU revenue for the first time.
  • Client and Gaming expected to decline more than 20% sequentially.
  • Embedded expected to grow by double digits.

CEO Lisa Su said that as production of Helios systems and Venice CPUs scales, growth should accelerate further in the fourth quarter. Looking further out, the company expects company-wide revenue growth of more than 80% in 2027, with the data center exceeding 80% of total revenue.

6. Market Context and Investor Reaction: Why This Report Lit Up the Stock

Market sentiment around the AI trade has cooled, and Intel had just sold off sharply on weak guidance. Against that backdrop, AMD’s report checked several demanding boxes:

  1. Q3 results beat across the board, showing that AI demand is converting into real revenue and profit.
  2. Q4 guidance came in well above expectations, giving the market room to raise estimates.
  3. The results widened the narrative gap with Intel on who is more directly benefiting from AI infrastructure build-out.
  4. Near-term free cash flow pressure was largely overlooked because the strong guidance made the inventory build look like preparation for growth rather than a sign of weak demand.

As a result, the stock rose quickly after hours, gaining more than 9% at one point, and helped lift other chip stocks as well.
