According to media predictions, the Democratic Party achieved a historic victory in the US midterm elections, and this outcome quickly reshaped global market expectations.

According to The Smart Finance App, media forecasts indicate that the Democratic Party achieved a historic victory in the U.S. midterm elections, not only reclaiming control of the House of Representatives but also flipping Senate seats in several key states, with the prospect of securing a majority in gubernatorial races nationwide. This outcome rapidly reshaped global market expectations: investors began to reassess “Trump trades” centered on Trump’s policy agenda, with systematic repricing occurring across AI infrastructure, cryptocurrencies, and fiscal expansion expectations.

As of press time, S&P 500 futures fell about 0.9%, Nasdaq 100 futures dropped by as much as 2%, and Dow futures declined approximately 156 points; the VIX volatility index futures surged above 20. The dollar index weakened across the board, and the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell as much as 0.4%, marking its largest single-day drop in a month; in contrast, U.S. Treasuries gained, with the 10-year yield down about 7 basis points to 4.89%, and the 5-year yield falling 9 basis points to 4.68% at one point.

AI Trading First in Line: Uncertainty in Regulation and Data Centers

Among sectors, AI saw the most significant pressure in this market correction. The dip in Nasdaq 100 futures points to another weak trading day for tech stocks, with Nvidia (NVDA.US) falling in overnight trading, extending the downturn that had already affected Asian chip stocks. The Korea Kospi Index tumbled as much as 4% intraday, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both dropping over 5% before slightly paring losses; the Nikkei 225 in Japan was down nearly 5%.

The core market worry is that with the Democratic Party controlling Congress, stricter scrutiny over the tech sector and data center construction will follow. Both parties’ candidates have listed data centers as a campaign issue, further exacerbating existing market concerns over the scale and returns of AI spending. Anna Wu, investment strategist and founder of Floodlines Research, commented, “A Democratic-controlled Congress and Democratic-led states will mean more oversight over data centers, electricity usage, and local approvals. Current market sentiment is fragile and self-reinforcing—investors are selling AI first, asking questions later.”

Pepperstone head of research Chris Weston added: “A blue wave may have been partly priced in, but its scale is forcing a marketwide risk reassessment. Right now, equities bear the heaviest political uncertainty, with tech and AI at the heart of the correction.”

Clean Energy Bucks the Trend: Policy Reversal Speculation Heats Up

In sharp contrast, clean energy stocks like solar soared. Investors are betting that a Democratic sweep could slow or reverse some of Trump's measures against clean energy projects, which benefits Asian solar, battery, and grid suppliers with U.S. exposure. Korea’s Hanwha Solutions surged by as much as 17%, and HD Hyundai Energy Solutions and OCI Holdings both rose at least 8%. In U.S. markets, Enphase Energy and SolarEdge Technologies were up as much as 12%, with First Solar and Sunrun rising 11% and 8.7%, respectively.

The Dollar Under Pressure, U.S. Bonds Strengthen: Cooling Fiscal Expansion Expectations

The dollar weakened against all G10 currencies, as markets worry a Democratic sweep could undermine the “U.S. exceptionalism” narrative, especially if stricter AI oversight drags on growth. Safe haven assets such as the franc and yen strengthened, with the Swiss franc leading the G10 in gains against the dollar.

The U.S. Treasury curve rallied, yields fell, and investors bet that a Democrat-controlled Congress could constrain Trump's tax and spending agenda, reducing the outlook for fiscal stimulus and extra borrowing. Wellington Management portfolio manager Brij Khurana said, “A divided government means the high fiscal spending of recent years will be curtailed. Historically, divided government has been quite favorable for U.S. Treasuries.” Nomura senior rates strategist Andrew Ticehurst also noted that a blue wave scenario is generally seen as bearish for the dollar and bullish for U.S. Treasuries, and that early Asian trading reflected this view.

Cryptocurrency Pulls Back: Legislative Outlook Shadowed by Uncertainty

Cryptocurrencies fell alongside risk assets, as the midterm results injected uncertainty into industry-backed legislative pathways. Trump had previously championed the sector, promising to make America the “global crypto capital,” establish strategic Bitcoin reserves, and relax regulatory pressure. However, after the election results, bitcoin dropped as much as 2.8% to below $76,000, while ethereum and solana also declined. Crypto assets had already been under pressure due to bitcoin spot ETF outflows and lingering effects of last week’s record-setting Binance hack.

Crude Oil and Copper: Dual Drag from Geopolitics and Risk Appetite

Oil prices continued their downward trajectory as investors weighed chances of renewed U.S.-Iran peace efforts. Brent crude hovered near $103/barrel, offering some relief to Asian economies dependent on energy imports. New diplomatic developments between Washington and Tehran spurred the latest decline, but post-election threats of renewed U.S. action remain a market overhang. Analysts noted that a Democratic-controlled Congress may increase pressure on the Trump administration regarding war issues, but will not dictate U.S. military or diplomatic policy—thus, oil prices remain a key uncertainty for Asian markets, particularly for import-dependent economies like India.

Copper continued its recent losses, as the election outcome stoked risk aversion and called into question two key supports for this year's rally—AI investment enthusiasm and Trump’s proposed tariffs. On Wednesday, copper prices fell as much as 1.5%, with investors reassessing the boom in data center and grid spending while considering the outlook for Trump’s potential tariffs on refined copper.

For gold, traders are evaluating whether the Democrats’ strong showing will constrain Trump’s fiscal agenda and suppress further spending expectations. Concerns about widening deficits and U.S. government finances have been a major driver of rising gold prices. Gold rose as much as 0.9% to above $3,960/oz, erasing the previous session’s moderate pullback.

Market Outlook: Short-Term Volatility and Long-Term Opportunities Coexist

Some strategists note that election-triggered market volatility has historically been short-lived. Edward Jones senior strategist Angelo Kourkafas stated that the election results may serve as a “clearing event” to remove uncertainty, and that AI trends and geopolitics will be the main drivers of markets into year-end. He added that election-driven market swings could provide opportunities for long-term investors to buy the dip.

Nevertheless, with the probability of a Democratic sweep approaching 100%, the market’s reevaluation of “Trump trades” may just be beginning. From regulatory scrutiny on AI infrastructure and policy reversals for clean energy, to cooler expectations for fiscal expansion and a weaker dollar narrative, investors are repricing for a divided government policy mix. For Asian markets, sentiment shifts in tech stocks, fluctuations in energy prices, and the path of the dollar will be critical variables to monitor over the coming weeks.
