Earnings Drive a Sharp Rally as Investors Reassess Recovery Prospects

McDonald’s (MCD) shares surged 6.53% on November 4 following the release of its third-quarter earnings, closing at 280.22 on trading volume of 11.53 million shares. The stock subsequently edged down 0.78% to 278.04 on November 5. After a sustained rebound throughout October, MCD has moved decisively away from its earlier weakness, with investors increasingly focused on the recovery of its U.S. operations.
The earnings report revealed a combination of improving profitability and persistent pressure on consumer demand. Third-quarter revenue reached $$7.157 billion, up 1% year over year, while operating income increased 7% to$$3.595 billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose 11% to $3.57, exceeding market expectations. However, U.S. comparable sales declined 0.2%, highlighting continued pressure on consumer spending. The sharp post-earnings rally suggests investors responded positively to emerging signs of improvement in the company's domestic operations.

Value Meals Support Demand Recovery as Profit Growth Outpaces Revenue

Regionally, McDonald’s reported 1.5% growth in global comparable sales, including a 1.4% increase in International Operated Markets and a 4.2% gain in International Developmental Licensed Markets, with Japan delivering particularly strong results. The U.S. business remained relatively weak, as declining customer traffic offset part of the benefit from higher average transaction values. Meanwhile, improved franchise margins and higher other operating income supported profitability, demonstrating the resilience of McDonald’s franchise-based business model.
To attract price-sensitive consumers, McDonald’s has continued expanding value meals, breakfast promotions, and digital loyalty offers. Management indicated that U.S. comparable sales returned to positive growth in September, while underlying traffic trends also improved in October. The company is testing lower-priced meal bundles, with broader implementation planned for early 2027. Over the medium term, its NEXT strategy aims to support growth through restaurant modernization, greater operational efficiency, and product innovation. However, balancing promotional expenses against franchisee profitability remains an execution challenge. The sustainability of customer traffic growth will be critical to supporting the stock's recovery.

Technical Analysis: Strong Rebound Approaches Long-Term Resistance

On the daily chart, MCD has maintained an upward trajectory since reaching a low near 229 in early October, with the rally accelerating recently. Trading volume following the November 4 earnings release exceeded the recent daily average, indicating stronger buying participation. As of November 5, the stock had moved above its 50-day moving average near 248 but continued to face resistance around its 200-day moving average at approximately $282.50. The 14-day RSI climbed to roughly 75.8, reflecting strong short-term momentum while also suggesting an increased possibility of technical consolidation after the rapid advance.
The immediate resistance zone lies between $$282 and$$283, where recent highs converge with the 200-day moving average. On the downside, the 275 area represents initial short-term support, followed by approximately 268 near the upper boundary of the post-earnings price gap. Should the pullback deepen, the $260–264 zone would become an important area for determining whether the current recovery structure remains intact.

Trading Outlook: Breakout Confirmation and Traffic Recovery Remain Critical

In the near term, the central trading question is whether MCD can establish a sustained breakout above the 282–283 resistance zone. A volume-supported move above this range, followed by consecutive closes above the 200-day moving average, would strengthen the case for further improvement in the medium-term trend. If the stock encounters selling pressure at resistance, traders should monitor buying interest around 275 and 268
A complete reversal of the post-earnings price gap and a renewed decline below 260 would materially weaken the technical foundation of the recent rally.
From a fundamental perspective, the sustainability of the recovery in U.S. comparable sales and customer traffic remains the key variable for the coming quarters. If McDonald’s value-oriented strategy generates higher transaction volumes while preserving franchisee margins, investor confidence in its earnings growth could strengthen further. Conversely, if sales improvements depend primarily on temporary promotions, the stock may face renewed pressure from both valuation concerns and earnings expectations following its rapid rebound.
