USD/CHF Weakens for Second Consecutive Session

During Tuesday's Asian trading hours, the USD/CHF currency pair continued its decline for a second straight day, hovering near the 0.7970 level. The Swiss Franc has benefited from increased safe-haven flows, driven by ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and apprehensions regarding the Federal Reserve's autonomy.

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump revealed that Iranian officials had contacted him to discuss potential negotiations after he issued threats of military intervention in response to widespread protests within Iran. Trump cautioned, however, that action might be necessary before any talks could take place.

Demand for safe-haven assets has intensified as questions about the Federal Reserve's independence mount. This follows threats from federal prosecutors to indict Fed Chair Jerome Powell over testimony related to a renovation project, which Powell has characterized as an effort to erode the central bank’s independence.

Despite the recent losses, the downside for USD/CHF may be limited, as the US Dollar remains supported ahead of the release of December’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. This report is expected to provide further insight into the Federal Reserve’s future policy direction.

Market participants are currently anticipating two Fed interest rate reductions this year, with the first likely in June. However, a higher-than-expected inflation reading could dampen expectations for policy easing. The weaker-than-forecast December Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report has reinforced a more dovish outlook for the Fed. According to the CME Group's FedWatch tool, there is a 95% chance that the central bank will leave interest rates unchanged at its upcoming January 27–28 meeting.

$33.5 billion! This Amazon number has "shocked" the market

Amazon's free cash flow in Q3 plummeted to -$33.5 billion, four times higher than the market expectation of -$7.7 billion. The sharp decline was caused by the dual impact of $77.3 billion in capital expenditures and $48.1 billion in new debt in a single quarter. Although AWS's growth rate reached a five-year high of 39.3%, it still fell short of buy-side expectations, and its profit margin declined. The Q4 operating profit guidance of $31 billion was entirely below Wall Street and buy-side forecasts. The core issue is that for every $1 earned by AWS, nearly $4 in new spending is tied to it.
