After the recent deadly clashes between the United States and Israel with Iran, oil prices soared, and some crude oil producers took the opportunity to lock in prices for production extending into next year. Charlie McNamara, head of Bank of America’s commodities team, said several oil company clients hedged their production for 2027, setting a price floor of around $55 per barrel and using options to secure upside potential above $68 per barrel. On Monday, the near-month U.S. crude oil futures contract was quoted at about $71 per barrel. These producers did not engage in more aggressive hedging due to concerns that the conflict might escalate in the coming days, further driving up prices. McNamara pointed out that compared to past conflicts involving Iran, “this time the uncertainty is greater because it involves the entire region.” So far, fuel consumers ranging from fleets to home improvement stores have largely ignored the recent price increases. However, he added that if prices surge above $90 per barrel and begin to impact corporate profits, “the phones will be ringing nonstop.”

The Bank of Japan stated that, due to the ongoing population decline, it is difficult for overall consumption in Japan to achieve strong growth. However, this also means that overall sluggish consumption does not necessarily indicate weakening household demand.
