Tuesday, April 21: Key Market Updates

As Tuesday unfolds, financial markets remain subdued after a volatile start to the week. Investors are keeping a close eye on upcoming developments in US-Iran relations and are anticipating testimony from Kevin Warsh, President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Federal Reserve chair.

On Monday, President Trump indicated that it was "highly unlikely" the US-Iran ceasefire, set to expire Wednesday, would be extended. While some reports hint at a possible second round of negotiations before the deadline, Iran’s chief negotiator and parliament speaker, Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, stated that Iran would not engage in talks "under the shadow of threats" and hinted at unveiling new strategies if necessary. Meanwhile, US news sources report that Vice President JD Vance will visit Pakistan on Tuesday, though Iran has not confirmed whether they will send representatives.

The US Dollar Index (USD) edged slightly higher above 98.00 in European trading, recovering from minor losses on Monday. Investors are awaiting the US Census Bureau’s March Retail Sales report. US stock index futures are flat, following a negative close for major Wall Street indices at the start of the week.

In the UK, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that the ILO Unemployment Rate dropped to 4.9% for the three months ending in February, outperforming expectations of 5.2%. The report also revealed that wage growth, excluding bonuses, slowed to 3.6% from 3.8%. Despite these figures, GBP/USD showed little reaction and was trading slightly lower near 1.3520. The ONS is set to release March’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) data early Wednesday.

EUR/USD has been unable to extend Monday’s gains, slipping below 1.1800 in European trading. Later today, market participants will focus on Germany’s ZEW Economic Sentiment survey for April.

USD/JPY remains range-bound near 159.00 after ending Monday unchanged. On Tuesday, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to monitoring financial markets closely and intervening if necessary.

Gold (XAU/USD) continues to face downward pressure, trading below $4,800 during the European session.

VIPOil Risk Premiums and rToken Dividend Arbitrage Strategies

1. This week we focus on cross-asset positioning under an energy shock and arbitrage opportunities in tokenized-stock cash dividends. We recommend assessing market direction separately from income sources. Higher oil can weigh on growth valuations, lift inflation expectations, and spark expectations of Fed rate hikes, putting pressure on equities and crypto. 2. rToken net cash dividends can be distributed separately, but buying spot, shorting a perpetual, and holding across the record date does not automatically create an arbitrage. First confirm ex-dividend eligibility, platform snapshots, after-tax amounts, and the corporate-action rules for the short leg. Then compare funding fees, spreads, and execution costs. A dividend arbitrage strategy can be applied to STRC. 3. Next week's Fed decision and major technology earnings are key. Lower policy uncertainty can help restore risk appetite, but a sustained rebound still needs confirmation from rates, cloud growth, capital expenditure, and free cash flow. Our base case is a monthly-timeframe rebound in risk assets and crypto as earnings season, the Fed meeting, and the midterm elections pass and uncertainty recedes. Assets in focus: BTC, ETH, SOL, WTI, ASML, MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, CAT, and STRC
