On Monday, the Central Bank of Turkey resumed repo auctions previously suspended due to the Iran war. As a result, the overnight lira rate fell from 40% to around 37%, a single-day decrease of 300 basis points.
Previously, the rate had remained close to the high level of 40% since the outbreak of the conflict. This time, the Central Bank injected about 1 billion lira (approximately 21 million USD) of one-week funds into the market at an interest rate set at 37%, sending a clear signal of liquidity adjustment.
Auction data shows that market demand for funds was relatively strong, with total bids reaching about 9.55 billion lira, far exceeding the scale of the Central Bank's offering, indicating that the banking system's demand for liquidity remains robust.
This operation marks the Central Bank's reactivation of conventional monetary policy tools to stabilize short-term funding costs, providing a certain boost to market sentiment.
The focus going forward will be whether the Central Bank continues to inject liquidity into the market through repo operations, and whether this measure will effectively curb the further worsening of inflation expectations.
