Samsung Electronics reported a net profit of 75.21 trillion KRW for the third quarter, compared to an estimated 89.06 trillion KRW. The operating profit for the third quarter was 107.44 trillion KRW. Third-quarter sales reached 195.25 trillion KRW. Chip sales for the third quarter amounted to 147.1 trillion KRW. Samsung plans to announce its shareholder return plan at the end of January, with plans to distribute a 30 trillion KRW cash dividend for the third quarter.

Driven by the investment boom in AI infrastructure, Samsung Electronics achieved record-high revenue and operating profit in the third quarter, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of breaking records. Quarterly operating profit surpassed 100 trillion KRW for the first time, but net profit fell short of market expectations.

On October 29, Samsung Electronics released detailed financial results for the third quarter of 2026. Operating profit reached 107.44 trillion KRW, soaring 783% year-on-year and rising 20% quarter-on-quarter, with an operating margin climbing to 55%. Sales hit 195.25 trillion KRW, a 127% increase year-on-year, setting a new record high and marking the fourth consecutive quarter of breaking revenue and profit records.

However, net profit did not meet market expectations. Net profit amounted to 75.21 trillion KRW, below the market estimate of 89.06 trillion KRW. The main drag came from non-operating items, as financial expenses for the third quarter stood at 9.5 trillion KRW, dragging pre-tax profit down to 98.5 trillion KRW; coupled with 23.4 trillion KRW in income tax, the company's final net profit margin was 38.5%, down from 41.8% in the second quarter.

The core driver of this round of explosive performance remains semiconductors, especially AI-related memory products. Samsung's DS semiconductor business reported third-quarter sales of 147.1 trillion KRW and operating profit of 106.5 trillion KRW, almost contributing the entirety of the group's operating profit.

Memory business sales reached 140.7 trillion KRW, up 16% quarter-on-quarter and surging 427% year-on-year, mainly driven by HBM4 volume expansion, strong server SSD demand, and broad-based increases in memory prices.

Looking ahead, Samsung announced a more aggressive capital expenditure plan: capital expenditures for 2026 are expected to total 84.4 trillion KRW, significantly higher than the 52.7 trillion KRW in 2025, with chip-related capex about 76.8 trillion KRW, accounting for over 90% of the total.

The company also warned that as the AI ecosystem continues to expand, chip supply shortages will further intensify next year.

Income Statement: Operating Margin Rises to 55%, but Net Profit Dragged by Financial Expenses

In terms of overall profitability, Samsung exhibited typical features of an AI-driven upcycle in the third quarter.

Third-quarter sales stood at 195.3 trillion KRW, up 127% from 86.1 trillion KRW a year earlier; operating profit was 107.4 trillion KRW, a massive increase from 12.2 trillion KRW in the same period last year. The company stated that this was the first time a global tech firm reported quarterly operating profit exceeding 100 trillion KRW.

In terms of gross margin, third-quarter gross profit was 135.3 trillion KRW, representing a 69.3% gross margin—significantly higher than the 38.9% a year earlier. Operating margin was 55.0%, up 2.8 percentage points from the second quarter and over 40 percentage points higher than the 14.1% in the same period last year.

Expenses were relatively restrained. Third-quarter selling, general and administrative expenses were 27.8 trillion KRW, accounting for 14.2% of revenue—down from 24.8% a year ago; R&D investment was 14.4 trillion KRW, down 10% quarter-on-quarter but up 63% year-on-year, indicating Samsung’s continued high investment in AI chips, advanced process nodes, and next-generation displays.

However, net profit failed to beat expectations, mainly due to financial expenses. In the third quarter, financial income/expenses amounted to negative 9.5 trillion KRW for Samsung, compared to a positive 4.7 trillion KRW in the second quarter. As a result, despite record-high operating profit, pre-tax profit stood at 98.5 trillion KRW and net profit at 75.1 trillion KRW, both below market forecasts.

Semiconductors: HBM4 and Server SSDs Become Growth Engines

The main source of Samsung’s third-quarter growth was the DS division.

DS business reported third-quarter sales of 147.1 trillion KRW, up 15% quarter-on-quarter and 344% year-on-year; operating profit was 106.5 trillion KRW, increasing by 17.3 trillion KRW from the second quarter and by 99.5 trillion KRW from a year earlier. Based on divisional revenue, DS’s operating margin was about 72%, reflecting price elasticity amid strong demand for AI storage.

Among them, memory business sales reached 140.7 trillion KRW, up 16% quarter-on-quarter and 427% year-on-year. Samsung indicated that, due to capacity constraints, the company actively optimized its product mix, focusing resources on AI-related products; meanwhile, strong server demand drove up memory prices across various application segments.

HBM4 is the most important keyword this season. Samsung stated that its product competitiveness allowed for a significant expansion in HBM4 sales, while actively accommodating growing server SSD demand. As AI training and inference clusters continue to expand, high-bandwidth memory, server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs have become the most sought-after products.

Samsung remains optimistic for the fourth quarter. The company expects AI infrastructure investment to continue to be driven by global AI competition, with the new generation of CPU/GPU platforms further boosting storage demand; QLC SSD demand associated with personal AI Agent services will also rise rapidly. Samsung plans to further ramp up HBM, server DRAM, and SSD sales, and expand supplies of high-speed server DDR5 and QLC SSDs.

Foundry and System LSI: Advanced Node Demand Recovers, Taylor Fab in Focus

Beyond memory, Samsung’s System LSI and foundry businesses also showed improvements.

For System LSI, revenue growth in the third quarter was mainly supported by mass production of SoCs and image sensors for new models in the second half of the year. The company also stated it has secured custom SoC projects through new customer collaborations. In the fourth quarter, Samsung expects flagship SoCs and 200MP sensors to maintain stable production and sales.

The foundry business benefited from advanced node demand. Samsung stated that both revenue and profit from foundry increased significantly in the third quarter, mainly due to higher HBM B-Die sales and expanding advanced node sales. The company has also secured 2nm HPC customer orders, including major cloud service providers.

Looking to the fourth quarter, Samsung expects foundry revenue to grow by double digits and continue profitability improvements, driven by the ramp-up in the second-generation 2nm mobile chips, mass production of 4nm NPUs, and the expansion of storage-related product sales.

By 2027, Samsung will focus on capturing AI/HPC demand with advanced 4nm/2nm nodes while strengthening global supply capabilities. The company specifically noted that the commencement of operations at its first wafer fab in Taylor, USA, will enhance its global advanced process supply capability.

Capital Expenditure Significantly Raised: Chip Investment Exceeds 90% of Total

The most notable forward-looking item from this earnings report is the significant expansion of capital expenditures.

The company expects capital expenditures to total 84.4 trillion KRW in 2026, about 60% higher than the 52.7 trillion KRW in 2025; of which, chip capital expenditures are projected to be around 76.8 trillion KRW, accounting for approximately 91% of the total.

This indicates Samsung is directing the vast majority of its investment resources toward semiconductors, especially AI storage, advanced nodes, and server-related products. The third-quarter cash flow statement also shows that spending on property, plant, and equipment was 26.9 trillion KRW, significantly higher than the 14.1 trillion KRW in the second quarter.

Samsung also expects that as the AI ecosystem expands, AI infrastructure capital spending will continue to accelerate in 2027, with AI-driven demand potentially resulting in even greater supply shortages than in 2026. The company plans to secure high-end market demand through technological leadership, product mix optimization, and long-term contracts.

Balance Sheet: Net Cash Nears 200 Trillion KRW, Strong Financial Ammunition

Despite the surge in capital expenditures, Samsung’s balance sheet remains very robust.

By the end of September, total assets stood at 791.84 trillion KRW, continuing to grow from the end of June; cash and cash equivalents totaled 214.82 trillion KRW. Debt totaled 17.19 trillion KRW during the same period, bringing net cash to 197.6 trillion KRW—higher than the 167.6 trillion KRW at the end of June.

Leverage remained low. Samsung’s debt-to-equity ratio is 29%, with a debt ratio of only 3%, and a net debt-to-equity ratio of -32%; the current ratio was 310%, up from 263% a year earlier.

In terms of cash flow, operating cash flow for the third quarter was 98.6 trillion KRW, slightly lower than the 105.1 trillion KRW in the second quarter but still high. Investing cash flow was negative 35.2 trillion KRW, with capital expenditure on property, plant, and equipment at 26.9 trillion KRW; financing cash flow was negative 24.0 trillion KRW, mainly due to 12.5 trillion KRW in share buybacks, 2.5 trillion KRW in dividend payments, and a 4.6 trillion KRW reduction in debt.

Shareholder Returns: 30 Trillion KRW Cash Dividend for Q3, Future Buybacks May Lean Toward Preferred Shares

Samsung simultaneously updated its shareholder return plan.

The company plans to distribute a total cash dividend of 30 trillion KRW for the third quarter, with both common and preferred shares receiving 4,601 KRW per share. According to company disclosures, total shareholder returns are expected to range from 90 trillion to 110 trillion KRW in 2026, of which 35 trillion KRW has already been planned or completed, and the remaining 55 trillion to 75 trillion KRW will be returned via cash dividends and large-scale share buybacks and cancellations.

Notably, Samsung specifically addressed market concerns regarding the price gap between common and preferred shares. The company stated it will actively consider and adjust the proportion of preferred shares in future share buyback and cancellation plans according to market conditions.

Samsung noted that the next round of shareholder return policies, as well as the final amount and specific implementation plan for the remaining 2026 shareholder return, will be finalized and announced at the Board of Directors meeting at the end of January 2027.

UBS further lowers South Korean stock target! Exchange rates and profit expectations under pressure, recovery expected in 2027

UBS has lowered its KOSPI target for South Korea for the second time this year, cutting it from 8,000 to 7,500 points. Key pressures include a 15% appreciation of the Korean won, continued EPS downgrades, and net foreign outflows of over 19 billion Korean won in October. However, UBS emphasizes that this is a "profit reset" driven by exchange rates rather than a downward cycle and remains optimistic about a recovery in 2027, with an upside target of 9,300 points.
