Intel expects fourth-quarter revenue to be between $15 billion and $16 billion, compared to the market expectation of $17 billion, with optimistic forecasts exceeding $18 billion. Adjusted earnings per share are projected at $0.25, far below the market expectation of $0.43 to $0.45. Production at the Israel factory was interrupted by an explosion in October, and the CFO stated this is expected to reduce fourth-quarter revenue by $300 million and lower gross margin by about 200 basis points. Third-quarter revenue reached $16.5 billion, up 21% year-over-year. PC chip revenue declined by 5%, and Intel expects weakness in the PC market to persist at least until the first half of 2027. Data center business grew 78%, but the CEO noted that shortage of AI chips has constrained performance.

Intel's fourth-quarter performance guidance fell well below Wall Street expectations, causing its stock price to plunge more than 20% in after-hours trading. The chip giant's recovery narrative is facing a severe test as it simultaneously confronts three-fold pressures: the explosion incident at its Israel plant, the persistent weakness of the PC market, and a shortage of memory chips.

On Thursday, Intel released its financial report, projecting fourth-quarter revenue of $15 to $16 billion, while the average analyst estimate compiled by Bloomberg was $17 billion, with some forecasts exceeding $18 billion. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to be just $0.25, far lower than the Wall Street consensus of $0.43 to $0.45.

The third-quarter results themselves were fair: revenue increased 21% year-on-year to $16.5 billion, roughly in line with expectations; adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.52, above the analyst estimate of $0.41.

However, the strong quarterly data failed to offset the hit from the weak outlook. After the announcement, Intel's stock price fell by more than 22% at one point in after-hours trading.

Israel Fab Explosion: About $300 Million in Quarterly Revenue Lost

Intel's fourth-quarter guidance was undermined largely due to the explosion at the Kiryat Gat plant in Israel. The accident occurred in October, resulting in the deaths of two employees and halting production.

According to Reuters, CFO David Zinsner stated in an interview that the explosion is expected to reduce Intel's fourth-quarter revenue by about $300 million and compress its gross margin by around 200 basis points.

The plant was shut down for about two weeks. The company is currently assessing the usability of the damaged wafers. "We're still evaluating which wafers are salvageable and which are not, so we need to watch if the impact will extend for a longer period," Zinsner said.

He expects that similar revenue impacts will persist into the first quarter of next year.

This factory primarily produces data center chips using Intel's 10nm process. Zinsner said the company plans to resume ramping up mass production at the facility by the end of this week.

PC Market Decline Extending to 2027, Memory Shortage a Core Pain Point

Beyond the plant incident, persistent weakness in the PC market poses a deeper structural challenge. Intel's third-quarter client computing business (i.e., PC chips) revenue declined by 5% year-on-year to $8.1 billion, missing analyst expectations of $8.98 billion.

Intel expects PC market weakness to continue at least until the first half of 2027, with market size falling 12% in 2026 and a further 10% in 2027.

CEO Lip-Bu Tan cited rising memory prices as the primary challenge facing the PC market. "My prediction is that by 2027, this will be a serious issue for everyone—not just us. The entire market will be impacted," Tan said.

Surging AI server demand has increased DRAM memory chip consumption, resulting in shortages among manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, driving prices higher. This in turn pushes up prices for notebooks and desktop computers, suppresses end-user demand, and indirectly weakens Intel's PC processor shipments.

Data Center Business Grows Strongly, Supply Bottlenecks Limit Upside

Nevertheless, Intel's data center and AI business continued to show strong growth, with third-quarter revenue up 78% year-on-year to $7.3 billion, serving as a key pillar of overall performance.

The continued expansion of AI service deployments is boosting demand for Intel's general processors, opening a pathway into an AI chip market dominated by Nvidia.

However, Tan admitted feeling "a bit disappointed" with the company's inability to fully meet customer demand. He noted that, if not for the plant shutdown in Israel and some raw material shortages, the data center business could have performed even better. "I'm a little disappointed that we couldn't fulfill all customer demand," Tan said in an interview.

Intel's overall gross margin in the third quarter was 43%, but the company expects it to narrow to 38% in the fourth quarter, with the Israel plant incident being a major source of downward pressure.

Foundry Expansion Strategy Continues, Capital Spending Guidance Raised

In facing these challenges, Intel is maintaining an expansionary approach to capital investments. The company has raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast from $18 billion (in July) to $20 billion and stated that spending will increase "substantially" in 2027 to expand manufacturing capacity.

In August, Intel raised $23 billion through a stock offering to fund the expansion of its foundry business.

Intel's foundry business saw third-quarter revenue increase by 58% year-on-year to $6.7 billion. This segment is opening its foundry services to external customers, directly competing with TSMC. Tan said the company is increasingly confident in its ability to attract outside chipmakers to use its facilities.

CFO Zinsner also said that the company will "continue to make disciplined capacity investments to increase supply and support future growth."

Recovery Path Remains Uncertain, Market Confidence Tested

Since Lip-Bu Tan took over as CEO of Intel in March 2025, the company has improved its financial condition, cut redundant positions, and brought in key external investors including Nvidia and the US government. The stock has at one point gained over 150% this year, reflecting the market's expectation that Intel will become a key beneficiary of the AI wave.

However, this guidance miss has challenged that expectation. Intel continues to lose PC and server chip market share to AMD and struggles to shake Nvidia's dominance in the lucrative AI accelerator chip market.

While the company remains optimistic about long-term product demand and is increasing investments in new equipment to boost capacity, many uncertainties remain in Intel's recovery process, especially as its technological leadership is yet to be fully restored and its foundry business awaits validation from major customers.
