October 30 -
** Shares of payment processor Global Payments (GPN.N) rose 12% in afternoon trading to $96.19
** The Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that private equity firm CD&R is seeking to acquire GPN, which has an enterprise value of about $40 billion
** The report added that CD&R has teamed up with private equity group GTCR (the largest shareholder of Global Payments) to jointly launch an acquisition offer for the payment processor
** Both CD&R and GTCR declined to comment, while Global Payments has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment
** William Blair analysts stated: “Given that GTCR holds about 15% of GPN at a price of $97 per share, we believe this scenario is credible. However, Global Payments' nearly $22 billion net debt could be an obstacle, especially in a rising interest rate environment”
** William Blair analysts added that if the deal goes through, it is likely heralding a new wave of mergers and acquisitions, during which traditional publicly-traded fintech companies could disappear from the market
** As of the end of the previous trading session, the stock had gained 10.7% year-to-date
